Those Instagram accounts are my professional portfolio, but they are also, in some strange way, my journal.

I’m not very good at playing the social media game. I don’t post that much, even though I’m a photographer, because I overthink it.
But this is something I feel I want to share.

In early February, my father passed away unexpectedly. I had planned to visit him two weeks later, but instead I never got to say a proper goodbye.
And I feel guilty, because in the last few years, since we didn’t live in the same country, I didn’t visit as much as I wish I had.

Distance has a strange way of changing things. Some arguments, some ordinary conversations, begin to read differently when they don’t happen face to face, when there is no small smile, no little gesture to soften the tension. Still, it was always a special and loving relationship. Even when we were angry at each other, we said “I love you” and “I miss you,” and we meant it.

It has been three months, and I can still hear his voice and see his face. There are so many moments when some small ordinary thing happens, and I want to text him or call him just to share it, but every single time the same sad realization arrives a second later: I can’t. He is not here anymore.

I wanted to share one of those memories here, but when I looked for a nice photo, the old saying “the cobbler’s children have no shoes” couldn’t have felt more true. As a photographer, I have so many photos of clients and strangers I meet on the street who allow me to take their portraits, but not many proper ones of my dad. Mostly phone photos.
When I was planning to visit, I told myself that next time I saw him, I would take a real portrait of him. But I never got the chance, and now I never will.
And still, I love these photos. Here he is holding my daughter when she was one month old, and I am holding them both. Three generations together.
I would give a year of my life to have one more moment with him, if I could.
I know I’m not the only one who has lost someone they love. But this is my own sadness, my own small chapter that ended too soon. I wanted to share it here in this journal, and say that I miss you dad.

My best advice for couples who are interested in a couples’ photoshoot, whether it’s for a save date, an engagement, an anniversary, or just because they like each other (which is the best reason, by the way), is not to be afraid to show what’s special about your relationship rather than trying to recreate photos that you’ve seen on social media. We probably go to the same places you’ve seen there (if you want), and we may try to create some of those photos, but the extra spice that will make your photos different from the others is your connection, love, humor, and romanticism.
So, when you’re going to meet in Paris, don’t be afraid to open up in front of the camera 💗

When Charles Garnier, the architect of the Opéra Garnier, presented the project to Emperor Napoléon III and his wife, Empress Eugenie, in 1861, the Empress, who admired the luxurious styles of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, remarked, “It’s neither Gothic, nor Renaissance, nor classical. What style is it?” To which the clever architect replied, “It’s Napoléon III.”

Palais Garnier, also known as the Opera Garnier in Paris, was built during the Second Empire era with the prestige and luxury of Napoleon III’s vision for France in mind. Many years later, while the building is admired, I find Garnier’s genius still amazing. It’s not due to the lavish use of gold, ebony, and marble, but rather his meticulous attention to light. Whether natural or artificial, light falls softly and beautifully on the skin and fabric, transforming everybody into living pieces of art.
That’s why it’s so satisfying to take pictures there.
